Blackbox isn't just a puzzle game; it’s a masterclass in hardware-level creativity. Unlike every other game on your phone, you are explicitly told NOT to touch the screen. It forces you to rethink what your iPhone actually is—a collection of sensors, cameras, and buttons. You’ll find yourself rotating your body, plugging in chargers, and looking for secrets in the most literal sense. It turns your entire reality into the game board.
The minimalist aesthetic is hauntingly beautiful, and the 'Aha!' moments are some of the most satisfying I've ever experienced in gaming. It’s rare to find a game that makes you feel genuinely clever for simply understanding how a gyroscope works or how brightness settings affect a virtual world. It’s a quiet, brilliant journey that everyone with a smartphone should experience at least once. It’s the kind of game that stays with you, making you poke at your phone settings just to see if there's one more secret hidden in the code.
I'll give it this: it's original. In an industry of clones, Blackbox actually tries to use the 'smart' part of the smartphone. Solving a puzzle by plugging in your charger or changing your brightness is satisfyingly tactile. It’s a clean, minimalist design that appeals to my conservative tastes—no flashy nonsense, just logic.
However, it can be incredibly frustrating. Some solutions are so obtuse that you aren't playing a game anymore; you're just guessing what the developer wanted you to do with your phone's volume buttons. It's a neat experiment, and I respect the craft, but as a 'game,' it lacks the cohesive flow I prefer. It’s a collection of 'Aha!' moments held together by a very thin thread.
Performance: Flawless performance; relies heavily on OS-level sensor accuracy.
Buy if: You love lateral thinking and want something that utilizes your phone's unique features.
Skip if: You want a game you can play while lying still or if you hate 'guess the logic' puzzles.
Available on: iPhone, iPad

So you think you understand this thing you’re holding? Think again. Stop tapping. Stop swiping. In fact, stop touching the screen at all. To crack Blackbox’s puzzles you’ll need to find solitude and stillness, climb mountains, call on friends, get in tune with the cosmos, and think outside the box.
Minimalistic visual clues make for incredibly satisfying “Aha!” moments, while sonic interfaces provide an extra level of guidance and nuance that makes Blackbox accessible with or without vision. Thoughtful haptic feedback, Easter eggs on Easter eggs, and solutions that can’t be found beneath the glass of your screen redefine what a puzzle can be. You’ll never see your device the same way again.
Think you’re clever? Prove it.
