Evoland 2 in IOS

An indie tribute to gaming

Our Site Score

89/100

Evoland 2 is a love letter to the history of video games. It’s a remarkable achievement in design that transitions seamlessly between genres—one moment you're playing a 2D side-scroller, the next a 3D action-adventure, and suddenly you're in a tactical RPG or a card game. The way it ties these shifts to a time-travel narrative is brilliant; the 'past' is 8-bit, the 'present' is 16-bit, and the 'future' is fully realized 3D.

The writing is witty and packed with references that will make any long-time gamer smile. Beyond the nostalgia, however, is a genuinely compelling story about fate and consequence. While some of the genre-specific segments (like the fighting game level) can feel slightly less polished than a dedicated title, the sheer variety and ambition of the project make it an essential play for anyone who grew up with a controller in their hand.

Dinsun Review

Dinsun here. The first Evoland was a gimmick—a fun one, but a gimmick nonetheless. Evoland 2 is a real game. It uses the 'evolution' mechanic to tell a surprisingly deep time-travel story. One minute you're playing a Zelda-like, the next it’s a tactical RPG, then a fighting game. It’s ambitious as hell.

My conservative side has to mention that because it tries to do everything, it doesn't do any one thing perfectly. The platforming is a bit stiff, and the card game isn't exactly Gwent. But the sheer variety keeps you engaged for the full 20 hours. It respects the player's intelligence and their history with the hobby. It’s a premium experience with no IAP, which is the only way an RPG should be played. It’s a bit too 'clever' for its own good at times, but I’d rather have that than another idle clicker.

It is a spiritual successor to the first game with a much larger scope, new characters, and a completely independent story.
