SALT PILGRIM is a spectacular indie masterpiece that breathes fresh life into the deckbuilding roguelike genre. The game's minimalist 1-bit art style and haunting acoustic soundtrack immediately immerse you in the sun-bleached, unforgiving salt desert of Tuzkum. The core thematic conceit—that water acts as your currency, your health, and your moral standing—creates constant, meaningful tension throughout every run.
Combat feels deeply strategic and satisfying. Building a deck that seamlessly balances water conservation with aggressive offensive synergies is a joy, and the addition of escalating difficulty tiers like Grueling and Brutal ensures long-term replayability for veteran strategy gamers. Paired with a reactive world where eight factions remember your past decisions, SALT PILGRIM is an absolute must-play on mobile.
At forty years old, I have grown thoroughly exhausted by mobile app stores overflowing with mindless idle clickers and superficial cash-grab clones. That is precisely why stumbling across Salt Pilgrim by Yunwoo Nam felt like finding a rare oasis in a wasteland. Set in Tuzkum—a desolate salt desert a millennium after nuclear reactors melted and the oceans died—this 1-bit world roguelike blends poker-style hand calculation deckbuilding with a faction system that genuinely remembers your actions. Stealing water or committing heresies puts your name on public registers, causing guards and faction avengers to hunt you down across a grueling twenty-floor pilgrimage.
From a conservative gamer who demands mechanical depth, strategic choices, and a world that reacts to player agency, this game delivers in spades. The combat requires careful hand management where unplayed cards stay in your roster, forcing you to weather hits to build massive combos on subsequent turns. Outside the dungeon, the Wander mode lets you explore land maps, farm, and manage a home base. It’s challenging, unforgiving, and dripping with atmospheric pixel art. If you appreciate smart indie deckbuilders that respect your intelligence and punish sloppy play, Salt Pilgrim is easily worth its admission price.

What's new in 1.0.5
• Signature skills can now be used once per turn. Uses per fight are unchanged. If you have uses left after using one, its button says "Next turn" until your next turn.
• Shadeoil now works as described: it negates every enemy attack during the next enemy turn, then wears off. Before, its 9 dodges could carry over into later turns.
• While Shadeoil is active, the combat info panel shows "Attacks negated this turn".
• HP bars now drop as each damage number appears, instead of all at once before the numbers. This applies to you and to enemies.
• The App Store now lists all four game languages: English, Korean, Japanese and Simplified Chinese.
Requires iOS 15.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.SALT PILGRIM is a 1-bit world roguelike. A thousand years after the old world's reactors melted and the sea died, you walk Tuzkum, a salt desert where water is money, faith and law. The world remembers what you do, and combat is deckbuilding.
A WORLD THAT REMEMBERS
• Eight factions hold their own grudges and alliances. Kill enough of their people and they send avengers after you. Earn their trust and they talk to you instead of attacking, and their shops charge you less.
• Share water with a faction's legend to win its favor. Its rivals will trust you less.
• Draw water in secret or open the priests' valves, and your name goes on the heresy register. Let it grow, and the city guard and the priests' enforcers come looking for you.
• Every person and animal answers when you tap them. Strike first in front of a witness, and that witness will speak to you differently.
• The pilgrims before you leave traces. A singer at the caravanserai sings of your last pilgrim, a gravestone marks where they fell, and the enemy that killed them waits deeper down, wearing a new title.
A PILGRIMAGE OF TWENTY FLOORS
• Leave your home village by the stairs. Go down through ruins, dead canals, caravan roads and a ship graveyard, then climb out into a holy city where water is handed out at the valve, one bowl at a time.
• Choose the road between floors. A 2×2 boss guards every fifth floor. Beat the twentieth to finish the pilgrimage; the road goes on past it.
• Start as one of seven callings, each with its own deck and signature skill. When you fall, the salt altar keeps what you earned as permanent perks.
WANDER
• A separate mode: leave your yurt and walk a land map of villages, caravanserais, ruins and hidden lakes, with dungeons beneath. You grow by discovering, not by killing.
• Farm, furnish and expand your home, and keep animals you can ride. Days go by, and the groups you clear out are replaced a few days later.
DECKBUILDING COMBAT
• Draw up to five cards, pick any of them and play them together as one poker-style hand. Damage is chips × mult.
• Cards you don't play stay in your hand: take a hit now and build a bigger hand for the next turn. Enemies show what they are about to do.
• Earn cards, relics, tonics and mutations on the road. Remove and upgrade cards to shape your deck.
• Every frame is drawn in 12×12 one-bit tiles.
• English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese.
• Cloud save through iCloud: continue on another device.
