95/100

Meg's Monster is an absolute masterpiece of indie storytelling that catches you completely off-guard. At first glance, it feels like a cozy, humorous subversion of classic JRPG tropes: you play as an absurdly overpowered ogre named Roy who has 99,999 HP and takes virtually no damage. But the tactical genius—and emotional weight—kicks in when you realize your health bar doesn't matter at all. The real objective is keeping a lost little girl named Meg from crying, because if she does, her tears literally end the universe. This simple twist completely flips standard RPG strategy on its head; battles become a tense, creative balancing act of hitting enemies while aggressively using toys, executing mini-games, and doing whatever it takes to keep a toddler smiling.

What starts as a charming 'baby-sitting' dynamic quickly evolves into one of the most poignant, beautifully structured narratives available on mobile. Odencat's signature pixel art handles the tonal shifts flawlessly, capturing laugh-out-loud comedy in one scene and devastating emotional depth in the next. The character writing is phenomenal, transforming bizarre Underworld monsters into characters you will deeply care about. Supported by an incredible soundtrack and multiple endings that will easily push a grown gamer to tears, Meg's Monster sets a golden standard for how mechanics can perfectly mirror a narrative. It is short, tightly paced, and leaves a profound impact that will stay with you long after the final credits roll.

Dinsun Review

Look, I have been playing RPGs for over thirty years, so it takes a lot more than just a nice coat of retro pixel paint to impress me. Odencat's Meg's Monster has an undeniably clever hook: you play as an invincible monster with 99,999 HP, but your actual health bar is the emotional stability of a tiny toddler named Meg. If she cries, the world ends. Conceptually, it is brilliant. It subverts traditional turn-based combat by forcing you to treat battles as deterministic defense puzzles where your actions are dictated by keeping an NPC pacified with toys rather than managing your own damage output. The narrative is well-written, heartwarming, and lands some surprising emotional punches that managed to pierce through my usual cynical exterior. However, as an actual video game, the mechanical cracks show up early. The combat is effectively a series of scripted puzzles disguised as turn-based battles. There is very little true tactical agency or builds to experiment with; you either figure out the specific sequence of toy-usage and blocking the developers intended for that fight, or you fail. For a veteran gamer, this makes the gameplay loop feel remarkably rigid. Once the novelty of the 'protect the crying kid' gimmick wears off, you are left with a very linear visual novel that occasional forces you into basic mini-games. It is a memorable story, but the interactive elements feel like a missed opportunity to build a truly deep gameplay system.

Welcome to the Underworld—a land of monsters and mutants who eat humans for breakfast.

One such monster—a hulking ogre by the name of Roy—has no interest in eating humans. But one day, he and his best friend Golan stumble upon a lost little girl named Meg, and discover something truly terrifying: the moment she starts wailing in fear, a blood-red hue washes over the sky, and the earth itself begins to tremble and quake.

That’s right: this small girl’s tears hold the power to bring forth the apocalypse—and the only way to stop it is for them to help find her mother so she can make it safely back home.

Meg’s Monster is a short, story-driven JRPG with a big twist. Players control Roy, who begins the game with 99,999 HP and is virtually untouchable—but the real concern is keeping Meg safe, because if she starts crying, it’s game over for everyone. Players will have to master the unique mechanics and mini-games baked into each battle, all while protecting Meg and using her favorite toys to keep her pacified.

Over the course of their journey together, Roy and Meg will encounter a host of quirky and colorful characters, all lovingly rendered in Odencat’s trademark vibrant pixel aesthetic that makes even scary monsters look cute. There’s plenty of drama and intrigue to be found here—and even previously defeated enemies can be befriended through optional sub-events.

What begins as a relatively simple and heartwarming story about two unlikely friends ultimately expands into something much greater, as Roy and Meg slowly begin to unravel the mysteries surrounding the Underworld and themselves. The result is an emotional journey that, like any good storybook, will remain in your heart for years to come.
