90/100

The mobile port of Final Fantasy VII is a dream come true for fans of the classic RPG. It brings the entire epic journey of Cloud Strife to your pocket without compromising on the story or gameplay that made it a legend. The addition of mobile-specific features, like the ability to turn off random encounters, is a godsend for players who want to focus on the narrative while commuting.

While the virtual controls take a little getting used to, they are highly customizable. The Materia system remains one of the best customization systems in RPG history, allowing for endless strategic combinations. Seeing the cinematic summons and iconic locations like Midgar on a high-resolution screen is still as impressive today as it was years ago. It’s the definitive way to experience a piece of gaming history on the go.

Dinsun Review

I played this on three discs back in '97, and the story still hits just as hard today. Cloud’s journey, Aerith’s fate—it’s the stuff of gaming legend for a reason. Having it in my pocket is a treat, and I actually appreciate the 'cheats' they added. Look, I’m 40; I don’t have 50 hours to grind for levels anymore. Being able to turn off random encounters when I just want to move the story along is a godsend.

However, Square Enix is lazy with their ports. The touch controls are just an overlay that covers the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds. It feels like playing through a foggy window. The character models are the original low-poly blocks, which look incredibly jarring against the high-resolution screens of modern iPhones. It’s a 10/10 game trapped in a 6/10 wrapper. If you can get past the visuals, it’s still one of the best stories ever told.
