Konami's release of 'Castlevania: 40th Anniversary' on mobile is a nostalgic love letter to action-platformer enthusiasts and veteran vampire hunters alike. Stepping back into the boots of Simon Belmont on an iPhone or iPad brings back all the brutal, unyielding design choices that defined the 8-bit era. The game retains every frame of its original presentation, from the atmospheric chiptune music—featuring legendary tracks like 'Vampire Killer'—to the iconic gothic pixel art that laid the groundwork for one of gaming's most celebrated franchises.
From a gameplay perspective, this is pure classic Castlevania: deliberate movement, strict jump arcs, knockback damage from enemies, and methodical sub-weapon management. Every candle destroyed and heart collected carries weight, particularly when preparing for punishing boss fights against Medusa, Frankenstein, Death, and Count Dracula himself. While modern gamers accustomed to forgiving checkpoints and fluid Metroidvania movement might experience severe culture shock, purists will appreciate that Konami didn't dilute the original challenge.
The mobile conversion relies on an on-screen virtual d-pad and touch buttons. While touch controls are rarely ideal for a game requiring frame-perfect precision, the layout is responsive enough to clear stages with practice. The added convenience of full offline functionality makes it a fantastic pocket-sized trip down memory lane. For anyone who wants to experience where the Belmont legacy began, this 40th-anniversary mobile release remains an essential piece of gaming history.
Look, I have tremendous respect for where Castlevania started. I played the original on a CRT back when stiff jump arcs and knockback into instant-death pits were the standard. But slapping virtual touch buttons on an unforgiving 8-bit platformer without physical tactile feedback feels rough. If your thumb slips by two millimeters, you're falling into a pit.
Performance: Runs at a solid framerate with no performance drops; touch overlay can feel imprecise during tight platforming sections.
Buy if: You are a retro purist who loves classic Castlevania and plans to play with a physical Bluetooth controller.
Skip if: You expect modern Metroidvania movement, checkpoint leniency, or precise touch-native controls.

Iconic 8-bit chiptune soundtrack including 'Vampire Killer'
On-screen touch controls optimized for mobile gameplay
Full offline play support without active internet requirement
Classic roster of sub-weapons: Holy Water, Cross, Axe, Dagger, Stopwatch
6 intense blocks containing 18 stages and iconic gothic boss fights
Begin outside Count Dracula's castle gates. Smash the torches to collect hearts and sub-weapons, prioritizing the Dagger or Holy Water. Cross the courtyard into the entrance hall. Ascend the staircases while defeating Ghoul zombies and Panther beasts. Reach the final chamber of Block 1 and face the first boss: giant Phantom Bat. Dodge its aerial swoops and strike its body using your whip or Holy Water until it crumbles.
Navigate the upper ramparts filled with Spear Knights, Bats, and falling Spikes. Be extremely cautious with jump timing near pit hazards. Collect the Stopwatch or Cross sub-weapon to manage large groups of enemies. Defeat the Medusa Heads as they float in sinusoidal patterns. At the end of the block, confront Medusa in her lair; freeze her or time your strikes to avoid her gaze and stone projectile attacks.
Traverse the elevated chapel structures plagued by Flea Men and Ravens. Precision platforming is paramount here—avoid getting knocked backward into instant-death pits by enemy collisions. Battle past the Bone Pillars and Red Skeletons. At the summit, face the Mummy Twins. Focus on one Mummy at a time while weaving through their bandage projectiles.
Descend into the damp underground caverns. Fishmen will jump out of the water hazards continuously, so maintain steady forward momentum. Watch for falling stalactites and moving platforms. Reach the end of the caverns to fight Frankenstein's Monster and Flea Man. Eliminate Flea Man quickly using Holy Water or the Cross before turning your full attention to Frankenstein.
Ascend toward the keep through hallways crawling with Red Axes, Skeleton Soldiers, and relentless Medusa Heads. The enemy density peaks in this section, demanding master-level sub-weapon usage and distance control with the whip. Meet Death at the top of the tower. Dodge his hovering scythes constantly while dealing damage between his attacks.
Walk the final stretch over the bridge and through the clock tower mechanism. Climb the staircase leading to Count Dracula's throne room. In Phase 1, jump over Dracula's fireballs and strike his head. Upon depleting his health, Dracula transforms into a gigantic winged demon for Phase 2. Stay mobile, throw Holy Water/Crosses to lock his movement, and whip his head repeatedly to end the curse of Transylvania.
