Bugsnax in IOS

Creature collecting adventure

Our Site Score

95/100

Bugsnax is one of the most delightful and surprisingly deep adventure games on the App Store. At first glance, it looks like a colorful, whimsical game about catching snack-shaped bugs. However, once you land on Snaktooth Island, you discover a compelling mystery and a cast of Grumpuses that are written with incredible emotional depth. The core loop of discovering a new Bugsnak and figuring out the puzzle of how to catch it using your various tools is constantly engaging.

The mobile port is exceptionally well-handled. The touch controls for deploying traps and snapping photos are intuitive, and the vibrant art style looks stunning on Retina displays. Feeding Bugsnax to the islanders and watching their limbs transform into food is both hilarious and slightly disturbing in the best way possible. It’s a rare game that manages to be both a great puzzle-adventure and a heartfelt story about community. Don't let the cute exterior fool you; there's a real story here.

Dinsun Review

Dinsun here. I went into Bugsnax expecting a child’s game, and while the visuals are certainly... bright, the actual experience is surprisingly substantial. The writing is the standout here—the characters have actual personalities and problems, which is rare for this genre. Capturing the 'snax' themselves is essentially a series of environmental puzzles. Some are clever, others are just tedious trial and error.

My main gripe is the technical side on mobile. It’s a heavy game, and the controls feel a bit cramped on a phone screen compared to a console. It's a 'good' game, maybe even a 'great' one for the right audience, but it’s a bit too whimsical for my tastes. I appreciate the craft, but the core loop of 'feed creatures to change their limbs' is a bit grotesque if you think about it too long. Still, it’s a proper game with a proper ending, and I respect that.
