Ax Roguelike in IOS

Deck-building Roguelike

Our Site Score

82/100

Ax Roguelike is a surprisingly deep deck-building experience that sheds the typical fantasy tropes for a more focused, tactical approach to the genre. As a fan of the 'Slay the Spire' era of gaming, I was immediately struck by how well this title translates complex synergies to a vertical mobile screen. The loop is classic: enter a dungeon, fight turn-based battles, collect new abilities, and inevitably fall only to start again with more knowledge.

What sets Ax apart is the clarity of its UI. Roguelikes can often feel cluttered, but here, the intent of every card and enemy action is readable at a glance. The difficulty curve is steep but fair; you’ll find yourself agonizing over a single choice of upgrade because the margins for error in later stages are razor-thin. It’s a 'just one more run' kind of game that respects your time while demanding your full attention.

This is a proper challenge. It doesn't hold your hand, it doesn't have a 'rechargeable energy' bar, and it doesn't care if you're upset that you lost your progress. In an industry full of participation trophies, AX Roguelike is a harsh teacher. The turn-based combat is surprisingly deep; you really have to consider the range and cooldowns of every skill.

The art style is 'retro-pixel,' which is getting a bit tired, but here it feels intentional rather than lazy. It’s a game meant to be played in short, intense bursts. My only real complaint is the UI—it’s a bit cramped on a phone screen, and I’ve made a few 'fat-finger' mistakes that cost me an hour of progress. But for a mobile game that actually makes me think? I’ll take it. It’s a 68—good for the niche, but too rough around the edges for a general recommendation.
