World of Demons is exactly what you’d expect from PlatinumGames: fast, flashy, and incredibly satisfying. The choice to use an Ukiyo-e art style is inspired; it looks like a 19th-century Japanese painting has come to life and decided to start a fight. The animations are fluid, and the impact of every sword swing feels weighty and powerful.
The demon-collection mechanic adds a nice layer of strategy to the hack-and-slash gameplay. Experimenting with different Yokai combinations to see which abilities complement your playstyle is a lot of fun. While the levels can sometimes feel a bit linear, the boss designs more than make up for it. They are massive, intimidating, and require you to use every trick in your arsenal. It’s a premium action experience that feels right at home on mobile, especially with a controller.
Dinsun here. I’ll be brief because this game is as derivative as they come. It’s a standard match-3/renovation loop. If you’ve played Homescapes or any of the thousand clones out there, you know exactly what this is. The only saving grace is the lack of microtransactions since it's on Apple Arcade.
The animation is charming if you like the source material, but I’m forty—I don't need a cartoon cat to motivate me to clear colored blocks. The puzzles get difficult in that 'artificial' way that encourages using power-ups, but without the monetization, the frustration is just... frustration. It’s competent, but it's digital oatmeal.
Performance: Very polished; no crashes reported on iOS 17.
Buy if: You love Simon's Cat and want a match-3 game without predatory ads or payments.
Skip if: You are tired of the match-3 genre and want something with actual strategy.
From the masters of action at PlatinumGames comes World of Demons. Step into the role of a samurai leading an army of Yokai minions as you embark on a quest against evil. Set in a world inspired by Ukiyo-e art, you will master fluid combat, execute powerful elemental strikes, and collect over 100 different demons to aid you in battle. Restore balance to the world and defeat the legendary Shuten Doji.
Stunning Ukiyo-e woodblock print visual style.
Deep combat system with dozens of weapons and Yokai abilities.
Epic boss battles against legendary Japanese monsters.
Character progression through weapon upgrades and demon fusion.
Home of the animation and merch.
The gameplay focuses on precision dodging and fast-paced combos. Successfully dodging an enemy attack at the last second triggers a slow-motion counter-window, a staple of PlatinumGames' design.
It offers a challenge, but the ability to upgrade your samurai and minions allows players to manage the difficulty through progression.
