Back in the heyday of arcade cabinets, games like Plants on Fire would have been a fun distraction to drop a few quarters into while waiting for your friends. Translating that high-energy, reflex-heavy arcade formula to a touchscreen mobile device is always a tricky balancing act. For the first twenty minutes, frantically defending your burning flora against oncoming waves provides a decent rush of adrenaline.
At forty years old, though, my tolerance for repetitive arcade loops that rely solely on twitch reflexes without meaningful strategic depth is pretty low. Once you figure out the optimal defensive pattern, the game turns into a monotonous grind where difficulty is artificially spiked through sheer enemy spam rather than clever design. It's colorful and runs smoothly enough, but it lacks the lasting staying power of classic arcade legends.
