Lil' Guardsman in IOS

Funny fantasy gatekeeping!

Our Site Score

94/100

Lil' Guardsman is an absolute delight from start to finish. Taking the core border-control gameplay framework of *Papers, Please* and infusing it with Saturday-morning cartoon aesthetics and laugh-out-loud writing was a stroke of genius by developer Hilltop Studios.

The heart of the game lies in its stellar writing and voice acting. Every visitor who approaches Lil's guard booth brings distinct personality, hilarious dialogue, and surprising secrets. Balancing your limited action points between checking credentials, using truth spray, or scanning bags creates a fun puzzle loop where no two interrogations feel identical.

Furthermore, the branching narrative carries real narrative weight without taking itself too seriously. The ability to rewind time means you never feel trapped by a bad call, encouraging playful experimentation. It is easily one of the best narrative adventure titles to hit mobile in years.

Dinsun Review

If you're going to borrow a game design template, borrowing from Papers, Please is a high bar—but Lil Guardsman clears it with an impressive amount of comedic flair and clever writing. As a cynical 40-year-old gamer who usually rolls his eyes at forced humor in video games, I was genuinely surprised by how genuinely witty the dialogue and character interactions are. You play as an underage castle guard tasked with interrogating eccentric fantasy characters at the gate, using an arsenal of questionable interrogation tools to figure out who is telling the truth.

The mobile port translates the mechanics cleanly, making it a great fit for touchscreen play where you can tap through dialogue trees and manage your tools without frustration. It doesn't have the bleak, crushing atmospheric weight of its direct inspiration, opting instead for lighthearted fantasy satire, but the deduction puzzles and branching outcomes keep you genuinely engaged. Easily one of the most mechanically and narratively satisfying titles you can find on mobile right now.

But be careful: who you let through the castle gates will determine the kingdom's fate.

See the Sprawl and its fantastical & quirky citizens through a royal wedding to one of two kingdoms vying for an alliance, and a subsequent siege by whoever you've angered in the process. Your decisions can determine the fate of the city and its people!

Interrogate 100+ fully voiced characters in just the right way to earn a perfect score!

Spend your hard earned gold wisely on powering up your guardsman toolkit, and strategically deploy these to admit or deny the right people or...goblins?

Use your trusty Chronometer3000 to go back and get a higher score... but be careful not to break space and time in the process.
