Isle of Arrows – Tower Defense in IOS

Roguelike TD meets board game

Our Site Score

91/100

Isle of Arrows is a stroke of genius. It takes the tower defense genre and marries it to a tile-placement puzzle mechanic, creating something entirely new. You don't get to choose which towers you build; you are dealt a random tile and must decide how to place it on your expanding island. It’s essentially 'Tower Defense Roguelike Carcassonne,' and it works brilliantly.

The strategy is immense. Every tile you place expands the island but also potentially creates new entry points for enemies. You have to balance building defenses with building roads and income-generating structures. It’s a game of agonizing choices where every single tile placement matters. It’s polished, intellectually stimulating, and incredibly addictive. It’s one of the best strategy games on the App Store in years.

Now this is how you modernize a tired genre. Isle of Arrows isn't just about sticking a tower on a corner and waiting; it's about building the map itself. The board game influence is heavy here, and I appreciate the elegance of it. You get a tile, you see where it fits, and you pray the next one isn't a dead end. It requires a level of foresight that most mobile games lack.

However, the RNG can be a real pain. There are times when the game just decides you’re going to lose because it won’t give you the specific tile you need to complete a circuit. It’s polished and the minimalist art style is sophisticated—none of that loud, colorful junk you usually see—but the lack of a cloud save at launch and the occasionally frustrating randomness keep it from being a masterpiece. It’s a solid, thinking-man’s game, which is rare enough these days.
