Dragon Ruins I is pure nostalgia in the best way possible. It feels like a love letter to the 'Wizardry' and 'Might & Magic' games of my childhood. The developer, Kotobuki Solution, has done a great job of removing the frustrations of the old genre—like the need for graph paper—while keeping the core satisfaction of party management and dungeon delving. The 12-class system is surprisingly robust, allowing for a lot of experimentation with party compositions.
I really enjoy the pixel art; it has a lot of charm and makes the monster encounters feel distinct. The 'streamlined' approach is perfect for mobile—sometimes you just want to crawl through a dungeon without watching twenty minutes of cutscenes. It’s a quiet, focused game that rewards careful resource management. While it might be too 'old school' for players used to modern action-RPGs, it’s a perfect pick-up-and-play title for anyone who loves the tactical satisfaction of a good dungeon crawl.
Dinsun here. This game speaks my language, but it also reminds me why we moved past some of these designs. Dragon Ruins I is a classic grid-based crawler. It's unapologetically old-school—no quest markers, no auto-save every five steps, and plenty of ways to ruin your party if you're not careful.
I appreciate the honesty of the pixel art, and the turn-based combat is solid. However, it leans a bit too heavily on grinding. I don't have the time I used to, and spending an hour killing slimes just to survive the next floor feels like a chore I've already done a thousand times since 1990. It’s good for what it is, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table.
