Seeing a massive, legendary AAA masterpiece like Cyberpunk 2077 running natively on a mobile device is nothing short of a technical miracle. CD PROJEKT RED has optimized this Ultimate Edition to squeeze an unbelievable amount of power out of premium mobile systems, delivering a version of Night City that looks shockingly close to its console counterparts.
The gameplay depth here is unmatched by anything else on the app store. Walking through the crowded, neon-lit alleys, driving high-speed hypercars through the Badlands, and engaging in intense, high-stakes gunplay feels incredibly immersive. Having both the massive base story and the masterfully written Phantom Liberty spy expansion in one package offers over a hundred hours of top-tier roleplaying content.
You will absolutely want to pair a proper console controller to your device for the optimal layout, and it will push your battery life to its absolute limit. But as a showcase of what modern premium mobile gaming is capable of achieving, this title stands as an unrivaled, historic triumph.
Look, I’ve been gaming for forty years, and I’ve seen my fair share of overhyped disasters turn into respectable titles over time. Cyberpunk 2077 is the poster child for that cycle. Now that it has arrived natively on the Mac App Store in its 'Ultimate' form, I felt compelled to see if Apple's silicon could actually handle the weight of Night City. Let's be fair: as a mature, deep narrative RPG, the content here is superb. The writing in the Phantom Liberty expansion is top-notch spy-thriller material, and walking through the neon-soaked slums of Dogtown feels genuinely atmospheric. The gameplay systems, re-engineered from the original 2020 mess, offer some robust build varieties whether you want to slice through corporate goons with a thermal katana or hack them from the shadows. Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba put in excellent performances that elevate the storytelling well above your average open-world checklist simulator.
However, as a conservative gamer who judges a product by how it actually runs on the machine you bought it for, I can't completely look past the rough technical edges of this Mac port. Yes, when it works, it looks marvelous on an XDR display, and seeing Ray Tracing running on an Apple chip is a technical milestone. But the user experience is plagued by annoying platform-specific quirks. The game has a bad habit of entirely freezing up if you dare to swipe to another desktop screen, and it refuses to dynamically route audio if you put your AirPods in after booting the title. Worse yet, there are lingering hard crashes connected to the photo mode and specific quest-related camera interactions that will literally halt your progress until you force-quit. It's a massive, 150GB+ package that shows how far Mac gaming has come, but CD PROJEKT RED still needs to iron out these localized glitches before it earns a glowing recommendation from anyone who values their time and machine stability.
Performance: The game demands a minimum of an M1 chip with 16GB RAM for 30 FPS at 900p, and recommends an M3 Pro for a stable 60 FPS. While frame rates hold up respectably using MetalFX DRS templates, significant input lag can occur at higher graphical presets. Hard freezes regularly occur when minimizing the game or swiping between macOS Spaces. Audio fails to switch output devices mid-game, and photo mode triggers consistent desktop crashes.
Buy if: You own an upper-tier Apple Silicon Mac (M2/M3 Max or Pro) with at least 16GB of RAM, love deep, mature cyberpunk narratives, and want a massive western RPG to stress-test your hardware.
Skip if: You get easily irritated by technical launch bugs, lack 160GB of free high-speed storage, or expect a flawlessly optimized, crash-free console experience on a base M1 machine.
