Chroma Squad in IOS

Tactical rpg 8-bit combat!

Our Site Score

88/100

Chroma Squad is a love letter to the Power Rangers and the Super Sentai genre. It manages to perfectly balance a tactical RPG with a business management simulator. You aren't just fighting monsters; you're running a struggling stunt studio, managing marketing, and upgrading your cardboard-and-duct-tape costumes into something legendary.

The tactical combat is surprisingly deep, featuring 'Teamwork' maneuvers that allow for satisfying combos and positioning strategies. The pixel art is charming, and the writing is genuinely funny, poking fun at the tropes of 90s television while celebrating them. It's a must-play for fans of turn-based strategy who want something with a bit more soul and humor than the average genre entry.

Dinsun Review

Indie games often rely too heavily on nostalgia to mask shallow gameplay, but Chroma Squad backs up its charming Sentai theme with solid mechanics. The combat system, utilizing 'Teamwork' mechanics for acrobatics and combo attacks, feels genuinely fresh compared to standard Final Fantasy Tactics clones. The meta-layer of managing the studio and ensuring battles look good for 'Audience Ratings' adds a compelling risk/reward system to the encounters.

However, it's not flawless. The difficulty curve is a bit uneven, with the late game becoming overly easy once you optimize your gear. Furthermore, the mobile port can feel cramped; tapping small grid squares on an iPhone often leads to misclicks, making iPad the required hardware. Despite these interface gripes, it’s a premium, complete experience with no predatory monetization. It’s a rare mobile gem that respects the player's intelligence.

No, it is an independent parody and tribute to the 'Tokusatsu' genre, though it captures the spirit perfectly.
