I’ll admit, the art style in Boba Story is adorable. It’s got that soft, pastel aesthetic that’s all the rage right now. If you’re looking for something to zone out to after a long day of work, this fits the bill. Creating the boba recipes is actually somewhat engaging—there’s a lot of room for experimentation with the different toppings and lids. It’s clearly made with a lot of love for the 'cozy' subgenre.
But under that cute exterior, it’s a fairly shallow experience. It’s a clicker at its heart. You click to attract customers, you click to serve them, you click to collect money. It’s a lot of repetitive movement for very little mechanical payoff. The progression is slow, clearly designed to encourage you to watch 'marketing' ads to speed things up. As someone who’s been around the block, I find the idle/clicker loop to be a bit of a lazy design crutch. It’s fine for what it is, but it’s essentially digital candy—sweet, but no nutritional value. I’m giving it a 64 because it’s polished and honest about what it is, even if 'what it is' isn't particularly deep.
