Skate City: New York manages to capture the pure vibe and rhythm of street skating better than almost any other mobile game. The gesture-based controls take a little bit of practice to get used to, but once it clicks, flicking your thumbs to do a 360 flip into a nose-grind feels incredibly smooth and satisfying. The New York setting is beautifully rendered, capturing the aesthetic of the city with its warm lighting and distinct architecture. Paired with the lo-fi soundtrack, it’s one of the most relaxing sports games you can play.
The challenge mode offers some serious difficulty for completionists, requiring perfect timing and trick selection. While some players might experience occasional physics bugs or funny ragdoll crashes if they mistime a jump, it rarely detracts from the overall experience. It's an essential download for fans of the Tony Hawk or Skate series looking for a premium, chilled-out mobile alternative.
As a man who grew up on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, this is a very different beast. It’s more about the 'vibe' than the score. The NYC environments are beautifully rendered in that minimalist style, and the soundtrack is genuinely good. However, the controls are a bit too simplified for my liking. It feels like skating on rails sometimes, lacking the tactile precision I crave from a sports title.
It’s a great game for a commute—short bursts of play that don't require too much focus. But once you’ve seen the three or four main areas, there isn't much to keep you coming back. It’s style over substance, but at least the style is impeccable. A solid addition to Apple Arcade, but hardly a revolution.
Performance: Occasionally dips in frame rate when skating through heavy traffic areas in NYC.
