I don't understand the obsession with turning basic manual tasks into mediocre mobile apps. Knit Away is barely a game; it’s a series of swipes that results in a JPEG of a sweater. As someone who grew up with games that actually challenged your reflexes or your intellect, this 'cozy' trend feels like a regression. The mechanics are so thin you could see through them. You tap a color, you swipe a line. There is no risk, and therefore, no reward.
The aesthetic is pleasant enough if you like pastel colors and soft edges, but the gameplay loop is non-existent. It’s designed to be played while you’re doing something else, which is the ultimate insult to the medium of gaming. If I wanted to knit, I’d buy some needles and wool. This is just a way to kill time without using your brain, and frankly, I find that a waste of perfectly good hardware. It's a 'lite' experience that leaves you feeling empty.
